Parliamentary election: Re-registration requirement for int'l ballot boxes met in only two countries

The Elections Commission (EC) has said that only two countries, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, have met the required number of re-registrations to facilitate vote boxes abroad.

The EC planned to establish vote boxes in six countries including India, Thailand, UK, UAE, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. Re-registration commenced on February 1, and the deadline expired at 4:00 pm on Wednesday. According to EC, only Malaysia and Sri Lanka had met the minimum re-registration threshold during the period.

The EC said a total of 13,378 individuals applied for re-registration within the deadline, of whom 11,919 were re-registered and 1,459 were rejected.

Meanwhile, with the parliamentary election scheduled for March 17, coinciding with the first week of Ramadan, the Parliament's Select Committee has approved an amendment to delay the election until after Ramadan. The EC has indicated that if the election is postponed, additional time will be allotted for re-registration.
