Speaker indicates postponement of ministerial approvals

The Parliament will work on the motion to approve the three ministers who were initially rejected by the Parliament after a resolution moved by Galolhu North MP Eva Abdulla regarding their renewed appointments is resolved, Speaker Mohamed Aslam said today.

On January 29, the Parliament voted against the approval of Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Housing Minister Dr. Ali Haidhar, and Attorney General Ahmed Usham. Despite the rejection, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu re-appointed them to their positions and is now seeking parliamentary approval for their reinstatement.

Following their re-appointment, MP Eva moved a resolution addressing the matter, which is currently being debated in the Parliament. Before commencing the debate, Speaker Aslam said how the Parliament will proceed regarding the ministers' reappointment will become clear when a decision is made on Eva's resolution.

“Therefore, I intend to postpone the matter of deciding on the three rejected minister's re-appointment until the work of the said resolution is completed,” Aslam said.

Aslam said ministers who were not approved by parliament in the past were later re-appointed and submitted for parliamentary approval. In this regard, during the tenure of former President Mohamed Nasheed, Dr. Ahmed Ali Sawad's appointment as Attorney General faced rejection twice. Subsequently, Nasheed appointed a different individual to the position, which received parliamentary approval.
