MDP explains reasons for rejecting ministers' appointments

The main opposition, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has clarified its reasons for rejecting the appointments of three cabinet ministers of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government.

The three ministers whose appointments were rejected by the Parliament are Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Housing Minister Dr. Ali Haidhar, and Attorney General Ahmed Usham. Despite the rejection, they were swiftly re-appointed to their posts, and their Parliament approval remains pending.

Speaking at a press conference held today to launch the party's parliamentary campaign, MDP's campaign spokesperson and Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa explained the reason why MDP did not back the ministers' appointments.

'How can we endorse these ministers? One has rolled up his sleeves to ensure the peoples' land and flats are revoked. Another has taken legal action against Parliament. The third has transferred ownership of his company shares to his children while awarding contracts for mosques and other projects to his family business," he said.

Easa emphasized that parliament members while being the representatives of the people, cannot approve such ministers in good conscience.

'The ministers we rejected continue to challenge us. They are openly declaring their intent to deny citizens their rightful properties and revoke land allocated to them,' he said.

Easa stressed that no one who violates the rights of the people can be given power and positions within the state and assured that MDP will work to stop such actions.
