Ex-Speaker Shahid assumes MDP presidency

Former Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid has been appointed as the President of the main opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The post of MDP President became vacant following the resignation of former President Mohamed Nasheed on June 21 last year.

Securing the post as the sole contender, Shahid expressed his commitment to infusing new energy into the party and fulfilling the aspirations of the Maldivian people.

"Seeking the help of Allah, I am taking over the responsibility of the presidency of the MDP to move our party forward with the full confidence of the party members," Shahid said.

From among the current MDP leadership, Shahid is one of the most experienced politicians. He has served in various capacities including Parliament Speaker, Member of Parliament, cabinet minister, and President of the UN General Assembly.
