Zakat-al-Fitr collection commences

The collection of Fitr Zakat has commenced.

Zakat Al-Fitr is an obligation upon every Muslim that has to be completed in the assigned time. This is an Islamic practice that connects the rich with the poor, and the poor with the poorer, eliminating poverty and reducing the disparity gap between the rich and the poor.

Zakat payments can be made online from March 11 until April 6. According to the Zakat House, although the last ten days of Ramadan have been declared public holidays, Zakat payments can be made online during this period.

Online payments can be made via:

DHIRAAGU app / DHIRAAGU Pay, SMS
Ooredoo M-Faisaa and SMS
Bank of Maldives Portal
Maldives Islamic Bank, Faisaa Mobile, Application, and Faisa Net
FahiPay Application and website
Bandeyri Pay

Those unfamiliar with online payment modes can pay Zakat at the Islamic Ministry's hall on official working days from 9:30 am until 1:00 pm. During the last ten days of Ramadan, the payments will be collected every day except Friday and Saturday from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm.

The amount for Zakat that has to be paid per individual is money worth 2.4 kg of the type of rice grain used by the person. This is approximately MVR 12 for those who use regular rice grains, MVR 70 for those who consume Thailand white rice grains, and MVR 70 for those who use regular Basmati Rice. While MVR 100 must be paid for high-quality Basmati Rice and MVR 125 for premium-grade Basmati Rice, red rice is equivalent to MVR 80. The rate for regular flour is equal to MVR 10 and MVR 75 for Atta flour.

The Zakat House said Zakat payments will be collected by island councils in the atolls.

Last year, MVR 9 million was collected as Zakat-al-Fitr.
