Swearing-in ceremony for 20th Parliament set for May 28

The swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected members of the 20th Parliament will be held on May 28.

At Tuesday's parliament sitting, Speaker Mohamed Aslam said preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are underway.

Per Parliament rules, the current session will conclude on May 15, with the last sitting of the 19th Parliament slated for May 13. Until then, parliamentary proceedings will continue as usual, Aslam said.

The Election Commission has released the provisional results of the 20th Parliamentary elections. While the ruling Peoples National Congress (PNC) secured a supermajority with 66 seats, the main opposition MDP won a disappointing 12 seats. A total of 11 independent candidates, most of whom were endorsed by the government, also secured seats. In addition, the government-aligned MDA won two seats, the JP one seat and the MNP one seat.
