Hearing set for FAM President Bassam's embezzlement and money laundering charges

A hearing on the money laundering and embezzlement charges against Football Association of Maldives (FAM)'s President Bassam Adeel Jaleel has been scheduled for Monday afternoon.

Criminal Court Judge Ismail Shafeeu will preside over the case.

Bassam's passport was seized before the hearings were scheduled. According to reports, the hearing scheduled for Monday will review this passport seizure.

The Prosecutor General's office had earlier said that Bassam, who has been the FAM president since 2016, embezzled $10,000 from FIFA funds intended for FAM affairs, depositing the money into his personal Bank of Ceylon account in 2018 and using it for personal purposes. If convicted of embezzlement, Bassam faces one year, seven months, and six days in jail. The money laundering charges against Bassam stem from allegations that he misappropriated funds deposited by FIFA. Conviction on this charge carries a potential fine between MVR 100,000 and MVR 1 million, along with imprisonment for five to 15 years.
