The "Cool School" project aimed at air-conditioning all government school classrooms has been launched.
The project was launched by the Education Minister, Dr. Ismail Shafeeu at a ceremony held at Maafushi School this morning.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Shafeeu said the "Cool School" initiative is a directive from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The minister said he had the opportunity to travel to some atolls alongside President Dr. Muizzu. During the visits, the President met with the residents of the islands in school halls. He also toured the classrooms, where he personally experienced the heat, and commented on it.
Addressing concerns about the potential increase in electricity bills due to the project, Shafeeu said that electricity usage is expected to rise by approximately 38 percent. He said President Dr. Muizzu has mandated that 30 percent of the energy required for the air-conditioning systems be sourced from renewable energy.
