Homeland Minister promises fair investigation for all prison deaths

Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihsan has assured that any convict’s death in prison will be investigated fairly.

Minister Ihsan made the statement on social media platform X, following the death of 45-year-old Mohamed Jameel, who passed away in Maafushi Prison on Friday.

“Every case of death in prison is independently investigated by the Inspector of Correctional Service,” Ihsan stated.

The minister further said the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) would also conduct an independent investigation if there were any suspicion surrounding such cases. Ihsan confirmed that the police have been tasked with investigating Mohamed Jameel’s death. Police have also been asked to conduct a post-mortem on Jameel if the family consents, he said.

Providing details on Jameel’s death, Minister Ihsan said doctors had determined that Jameel died of a cardiopulmonary arrest, and CCTV footage confirmed he died while in prostration.

“The corrections will share the CCTV footage with the investigating agencies,” Ihsan said.

Both Minister Ihsan and Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau attended Jameel’s funeral.
