Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusaan has said the police would fully implement President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s directives to relevant institutions to increase road safety.
The president’s orders follow a tragic accident in Hulhumale’ on Friday night, where a cyclist was fatally hit by a speeding sports car. In a social media post, President Dr. Muizzu outlined several measures aimed at improving road safety, including instructing law enforcement to immediately stop speeding vehicles and seizing both the driver’s license and vehicle. He also ordered the police to strengthen their efforts to enforce traffic laws and regulations.
Additionally, the president called for amendments to existing laws to impose stricter penalties on speeding offenses. He also ordered the immediate revocation of a permit issued by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on October 19, 2023, allowing a designated area in Hulhumale’ to be used for racing and drifting.
Further directives include prohibiting high-powered vehicles from operating on public roads, and banning the import and use of contraptions used to replace vehicle silencers and make the vehicles louder.
