President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that an additional eight months are needed to complete the dredging of the Fushidhiggaru-Rasmale' project. The update was provided during a ceremony held Friday night celebrating the Maldives' Independence Day.
The practical work of the Rasmale' dredging began on December 18 last year. The project is being handled by the Dutch company Boskalis-affiliated Marine and Civil Construction (CMC) of Sri Lanka. As part of the agreement, CMC is being granted 60 hectares of land in Fushidhiggaru and an additional 10 hectares in Hulhumale for 99 years, in exchange for their dredging services. This arrangement eliminates any financial burden on the state for this project.
Initially, President Dr. Muizzu had projected the completion of the dredging work within eight months, which would have concluded by August 18. However, delays were encountered shortly after the dredging began. While work has since resumed, the project now requires an additional eight months to reach completion, as confirmed by President Dr. Muizzu.
