India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, has made a visit to Addu City during his official trip to the Maldives.
Minister Jaishankar's arrival on Friday marks the first official visit by an Indian dignitary since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office. This visit, extended at the invitation of Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, aims to further enhance the strong bilateral relationship between the two nations.
Upon his arrival at Addu International Airport, Minister Jaishankar was warmly received by Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, Addu Mayor Ali Nizar, and other senior government and Addu City Council officials.
During his visit, Minister Jaishankar is set to inaugurate three key projects in Addu City which were executed with Indian support. These projects include the land dredging initiative, the completion and handover of the shore protection project, and the inauguration of the Hankede Bridge linking Gaukedi and Maradhoo, which was constructed by India's AFCONS company.
India believes that the Hankede Bridge project will boost tourism in the Maldives as the area where the bridge is located is to be developed for economic purposes. Additionally, the land reclamation project is expected to address the housing challenges faced by the residents of Addu City.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed optimism that Minister Jaishankar's visit will further solidify the enduring friendship and cooperation between India and the Maldives.
