The Maldives imported the highest level of imports so far during the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has confirmed.
On Monday, the state-owned company's CEO, Ibrahim Wajeeh released an infographic detailing the importation of general and container cargo from 2018 to August 2024. According to the graphics, as of August 31, the Maldives had imported 12,600 tonnes of general cargo and 5,375 tonnes of container cargo. This represents a 22 percent increase in general cargo and a four percent rise in container cargo compared to the same period last year.
Wajeeh said the statistics reflect an improvement in the economy since President Dr. Muizzu took office in November 2023. He predicted that the Maldives' economy would grow tremendously as the government begins implementing the initiatives outlined in President Dr. Muizzu's manifesto.
According to the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the Maldives imported goods worth $2 billion in the first seven months of this year. However, exports declined in this period.
