“Pres Dr. Muizzu’s India visit paves way for enhanced trade relations”

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing state visit to India will significantly strengthen trade relations between India and Maldives, President’s Office’s Spokesperson Heena Waleed has said.

Noting that the Maldives and India have historical closeness, Heena described the President’s state visit as a historic and successful visit. She noted that the trip has opened a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two countries.

“This visit has greatly facilitated the strengthening of the relationship between Maldives and India,” Heena said.

Heena added that the visit has expanded opportunities for stronger people-to-people and trade relations as well as government cooperation.

One of the key outcomes of the visit include the signing of a currency swap agreement with India worth $400 million and INR 30 billion. In addition, India's Instant Payment System, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has officially launched its Rupee card service in the Maldives.
