Villimale’s 100-bed hospital to be completed by 2027

The new 100-bed hospital planned for Villimale’ is expected to be completed within two years and begin operations by 2027, Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib has said. He made this announcement during the signing ceremony of an agreement between the Maldives and China to move forward with the tendering stage of the hospital project.

Minister Muthalib signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldives, while China’s Ambassador Wang Lixin signed on behalf of the Chinese government. The hospital, arranged during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to China, will be established with grant aid from China.

Minister Muthalib stated that the tendering phase will be completed in six months, during which the hospital’s design will be finalized and China will appoint a company to carry out the construction.

“Construction will likely begin around mid-next year,” he added.

The list of equipment and services required for the hospital has been determined in collaboration with the IGMH and Health Ministry, as the Villimale Hospital is run under IGMH.

Currently, Villimale’ Hospital only has five emergency beds and three inpatient rooms, with many residents traveling to Male’ for treatment due to limited facilities. Villimale’ has a population of about 15,000.
