The government has declared the Gulhifalhu reclamation project as completed.
The government made the announcement in a video released by the Construction Ministry on social media to mark the one-year anniversary of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government expanded the scope of the project by adding another 85 hectares to the area designated for the original reclamation by the former MDP government.
The ministry had earlier said that 42 hectares of the Gulhifalhu lagoon was reclaimed in March 2020, while 132 hectares of the project's second phase was completed this April.
In their latest update, the ministry said 100 percent of the reclamation project has now been completed. According to the ministry, protection work on 2.66 km of the reclaimed area has been completed.
Although the Construction Ministry has announced the reclamation project as completed, statements by Housing Minister Ali Haidhar in an interview with state media PSM on November 9 indicate otherwise. In the interview, the minister said preparations are underway to begin the dredging and reclamation of the final section of the project. While only eight days have passed since this statement, this raises questions about the true status of the project.
