A Chinese company has been awarded the contract for the construction of roads and municipal infrastructure in Gulhifalhu.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Mutthalib and China Machinery Engineering Company (CMEC)’s Regional General Managr Qian Haojun at a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Monday. Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Mutthalib said the agreement follows an MoU signed with CMEC and the Housing Ministry during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to China last year. The minister acknowledged extensive technical cooperation with CMEC.
“The preparation of the project scoping, technical specifications and concept level designing work have been done. After evaluating the proposal submitted by CMEC to arrange contractor financing and the ensuing discussions, we have now reached the point of a contract,” the minister said.
The project’s scope includes the establishment of a power distribution network, water and sewerage system, dewatering system, road development, jeepon ducting system, gas storage and distribution system.
With the signing of this contract, the contractor will now begin the survey and detailed drawing works. Despite challenges to the project due to a large area of Gulhifalhu being used for the Thila-Male’ bridge development works, the ministry assured that CMEC’s work will progress in phases.
