Ensis Fisheries reveals that the company will construct a new factory, worth MVR 15 million this year.
In an interview given to an fisheries industry publication, Ensis Fisheries' shareholder Abdul Wahid Thaufeeq said the factory, capable of storing 25 metric tonnes of fish, will be in operation next year.
He said when the factory opens in April, the amount of raw fish exported to Thailand will be greatly reduced. Thaufeeq added that with this change, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification will become more valuable to the country.
He also said the factory will create 250 additional jobs. The factory will be located in Hulhumale'.
The canned fish produced by the company is initially packed in Thai factories. The company exports to European countries as well, having earned the "Friends of the Sea" certification last year.
