Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has said that there were many challenges in bringing rapid development to the Maldives. Chief among them, he said, was climate change.
Minister Thoriq made the statement speaking in the forum held on sustainable development goals, noting that water safety and erosion were directly related to climate change.
"So far 70 islands had faced water shortages. Low water supply in warmer months is a prevalent issue. The Government aims to resolve the issue by 2018," Minister said.
The Minister said many initiatives were underway to achieve the sustainable development goals b 2030. He noted that the country had achieve five out of eight goals by 2015.
Speaking in the ceremony, State Minister Abdullah Majeed noted the multitude of challenges faced in working against climate change, adding that low lying island nations such as the Maldives faced the biggest losses from climate change. He added that UN had set 17 goals, 169 targets and 231 indicators as sustainable development goals for 2030.
Government agencies, NGOs and UNDP are taking part in the forum that began today.
