Tourist beds rise to over 34k

Tourist beds in the country has increased to over 34,000 beds.

Tourism Ministry statistics show that there were 34,708 beds in the 641 registered tourist hotels and resorts. This includes the 25,068 beds in 116 resorts, 4,902 beds in 332 guest houses and the 2,996 beds in 176 safaris.

Occupancy rates in the first quarter of the year is at 78.6 percent. Compared to the same period in the previous year, this is a dip of 0.2 percent.

Statistics show that currently, 109 resorts, 86 guest houses and 86 safaris are in operation. All tourists had spent an aggregate of 1,992,743 nights during the period. In last year's first quarter, tourists spent a total of 1,969,509 nights. This year's figures is an increase of 1.2 percent.

Even though the occupancy rates had dipped, the average number of nights tourists spend in the country had increased. Between January and March 2015, tourists had spent 5.8 nights. This year, the number has increased to 6.0.
