Two bills on children's rights will becom law this year: AG

AG Mohamed Anil today said bills on protection of the rights of children and juvenile justice systems have been completed and that the bills are expected to be ratified and implemented before year end.

He made the statement in the address he gave on the occasion of Children's Day.

Anil said this year alone, significant work had been carried out to protect the rights of the children, revealing that additional work will be carried out. He said two new bills on the rights of children had been compiled by the Government.

He added that the two new bills, one on the rights of the child and the other on the juvenile justice system, had been drawn up based on the latest recommendations of the Committee on the Rights of the Child. Therefore, he said he expected those bills to be passed from the Parliament and ratified by the end of this year.

"Additionally, we have planned to draft a national policy in collaboration with UNICEF. National level programs, in coordination with various government agencies, will be carried out to understand current status of children's rights and how to strengthen the initiatives," Anil said.

Anil said even though day and initiatives were carried out, individual responsibility was core in ensuring the rights of children were upheld. He urged parents, guardians and teachers to become exemplary individuals, adding this will create lasting impressions on them.

"We have to understand that habits like bullying are learned from the society, their surroundings, their experiences. We have to rectify that, become examples, so they can lead better lives," Anil said.
