Home Minister Umar Naseer has said the Government has begun discussions with the UK Government to extradite the former Speaker of Parliament and former Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Nazim from UK.
Speaking to Avas, Home Minister Umar Naseer said the deposed MP had traveled to UK after he was released to seek medical treatment in Singapore. He added that Correctional Services had begun proceedings to extradite the former MP back to the country.
Minister Umar confirmed that discussions were underway with the UK government to facilitate the procedure.
Nazim had left for UK, after filing an extension on his medical leave, which the Government had rejected. He had departed from Singapore, when the Government had ordered him to return back to the Maldives. Nazim was dispatched to Singapore on a travel document. The travel document is valid only for Singapore.
Many had questioned how Nazim was able to travel to the UK without a valid passport. The Government is yet to make a statement on the issue. Both Corrections and Home Ministry had said that they were investigating the issue.
