Cutting ties with Iran is a loss to Maldivians: Ex-Pres Nasheed

Cutting diplomatic ties with Iran serves as another loss to the people of Maldives, says former President Nasheed.
Tweeting while in the UK, former president Nasheed said that there was no reason to cut diplomatic ties with Iran.

In his tweet the former President said that there was no reason for Maldives to sever diplomatic ties with Iran and that this was a loss to the whole nation.

Maldives first established diplomatic ties with Iran on the 2nd of June 1975.

The Foreign ministry released a written statement announcing that Maldives was cutting diplomatic ties with Iran. According to the statement, the maintenance of peace in the gulf region went hand in hand with maintaining peace and security of the Maldives as well. Giving more details on the reason behind cutting diplomatic ties, the foreign ministry stated that Iran's actions posed a threat to the maintenance of peace in the gulf region and that Maldives condemned such actions.

The Foreign ministry's statement added that the Islamic Summit held in Turkey outlined that all countries involved had to respect state sovereignty. It further stated that guidelines from the OIC and UN charter be used to resolve problems between countries, and that Maldives called out to Iran to oblige with the rules.
