Maldives Police Service has urged caution over the rise of scammers posing as the Police, asking for bank account details. Police have informed the public not to give out bank account details even if the callers identify themselves as the Police.
A statement released by Police said that reports of scamming people for money have increased, and have asked the public to be cautious. The statement also stated that scammers have been calling people and tricking people into giving account information by persuading people that it was for investments or for special promotions.
Police added that they have started their investigation into this matter last week. Revealing more about this issue, the police have said that they do and will not ask for account details over the phone, even if it is regarding a case.
The police have repeatedly asked the public to be cautious about such phone calls, and have asked the public not to reveal such information. The police have also asked the public not to encourage scammers by responding to such calls.
