Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) has said that the opposition should not oppose every single motion proposition put forward by the Government.
CPA issued the statement after the organization's Secretary General Akbar Khan reviewed the status of the proceedings at the Parliament.
Speaking to press after concluding his two day trip, Akbar Khan said the Parliament had to focus on collaboration between the Government and opposition to bring forth the best results for the nation. He said this was more important given that in Maldives democracy was at its infancy. Akbar added that the opposition should assume the role of holding the Government and the Government should allow this environment to foster.
However, he said the opposition should not disagree to every motion put forward by the Government on principle, but rather analyze and bring out something substantial to hold the Government accountable.
"The Parliament Speaker himself agreed that opposition members should be given the opportunity within the Parliament to question the actions of the Government, express opinions and fulfill their mandates. The opposition has to recognize that this is a valuable opportunity for development. They should not oppose motions just because they were put forward by the Government. This would halt the Parliament," Akbar said.
Akbar said the Parliament Members have to prioritize on national interest over political aims, adding that cooperation and engaging in discussions with the Government was vital to generate positive results for the nation.
He noted that such collaboration can reduce corruption and will maximize the best use of state resources, at the same time fully addressing the concerns of the public.
