Home Minister Umar Naseer has said that the Government will issue a formal notice for former President Mohamed Nasheed to return back to the Maldives and that his medical leave will not be extended.
In a special interview given to "Avas" Home Minister Umar Naseer said the medical leave granted for the former President had been extended on many occasions. He said that there was a set guideline for convicts to follow when released for medical treatment and that taking part in political activities is not part of these guidelines. As such, he said that Nasheed had transgressed the terms of his release by taking an active role in the current coalition.
"We do not plan to extend the medical leave. We have in the past granted him much leniency. But now we have finalized the decision for him to return back. If he fails to do so, then he is residing there illegally," Umar said.
Minister Umar said that at the moment there were no measures that can be taken on Nasheed while he was in the UK, but will enforce the rule of law once he returns back to the Maldives. He said the situation is more severe as the former President has set a very dangerous precedent and as such, equal action must be taken against the former President.
The medical leave granted to the former President had been extended twice before. Nasheed had previously confirmed that he had been granted amnesty from the UK Government.
