Gangs, drugs issue stems from Opposition Coalition: Umar

Home Minister Umar Naseer said the root of causes of crime were gangs and drugs and that both issues stem from the opposition led Maldives United Opposition.

The Maldives United Opposition on Wednesday said the Home Minister should offer his resignation if he fails to prevent the stabbings. Responding to this, Minister Umar said said crimes cannot be stopped due to drugs and gangs.

Umar added that MDP had previously claimed that former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb had been heading the gangs and that Adeeb was now a senior member of the United Opposition. Therefore, he said the Opposition had no room to talk about gangs and violence.

"An alliance with Adeeb cannot legitimately talk about gangs, violence and corruption," Umar said.

Additionally, Umar said the other leader of the Alliance was a strong proponent of drugs, who had advocated the freedom to consume narcotics. The said the youth who had been into drugs had gotten the push, incentivized by Nasheed's involvement.

Minister Uamr said resignation was not the solution for violence and will not prevent the violence. He said the Government was carrying out many plans to prevent crime.
