Commonwealth appoint new envoy to Maldives

Commonwealth secretary general Patricia Scotland has appointed Kenya's Retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga as a special envoy to the Maldives.

Commonwealth is yet to make a formal announcement on the appointment, but the news has been confirmed by Kenya's the Star News. The paper reported that Mutunga had announced the new appointment in his farewell hosted in the Supreme Court.

In his address Mutunga said he will seek to "support a sustainable political dialogue process leading to a stronger climate of pluralism and inclusive elections in 2018, and to encourage the strengthening of democratic institutions and culture in Maldives".

Maldives had previously requested to appoint an envoy to to oversee the current political situation. There is no confirmed date when the new envoy will assume his position.
