The Commonwealth has appointed a national adviser to the Maldives to establish a climate trust fund under efforts to assist small developing countries in mitigating the effects of climate change.
The newly appointed advisor, Mr. Sagar Joshi, will be working with the Environment Ministry to develop a National Climate Change Trust Fund, as well as preparing associated operational manuals and procedures for the fund. He is also responsible for helping to build human and institutional capacity in funding climate change projects and developing funding strategies in the Maldives.
According to the Commonwealth, the Climate Finance Access Hub has appointed 18 advisors to Commonwealth member states across Africa, the Pacific, and the Caribbean as of this month. Fourteen advisors are currently working to provide funds.
The Commonwealth has so far provided US$250 million in loans and grants to 67 projects in Commonwealth member countries through the Climate Finance Access Hub.
The Commonwealth Climate Access Finance Hub is a project set up by the Commonwealth to support climate-friendly development projects in small countries to meet their targets, as climate change is damaging to them without significant participation.
