Umar Naseer

Umar's controversial tweet: "Nasheed turned Ziyattey to a woman"

Yesterday Home Minister Umar Naseer and former President Mohamed Nasheed had traded sharp blows over the twittersphere. The heated exchange spanned just under 10 minutes, in which firstly, the former President had alleged that the Home Minister had admitted to having been involved in framing the former Defense Minister Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim and called for his release.

Minister Umar's reply was swift and direct. He said that Nasheed had twisted what he said and that he had "changed a resignation to a coup and Ziyattey [Nasheed's then Chief of Staff] to a woman,"

With Umar's response, the whole of the twitter community had plunged into intense debate. PPM hardcore supporters had defended Umar's tweet, while others said this was a sign that the Minister had vented out and others had cautioned Umar, reminding that this was the Ramadan. Others had said that Umar would know most about the events that unfolded on February 7th. Opinion is divided over tweets.

Nasheed had tweeted against the Minister, who had said that Adeeb had warned both him and Nazim. Umar had said that based on the evidence it was estimated that Nazim had been framed by Adeeb, but the final verdict would be determined by the Courts.
