Former Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz has stated that during his tenure the investigation had not revealed any connections between President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom and the murder of the late Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali. Riyaz was the Commissioner at the time of the murder.
In a series of tweets posted following the verdict issued by Supreme Court last night, responding to a series of tweets against him, Riyaz said there was no information that can defend Humam. Stating that "information on the case will be revealed when the trial is over," Riyaz said at the time of his resignation, the Police was investigating possible leads on who had funded the operation.
He also said there was no point during the investigation which had pointed to any connections to the President and the murder.
Regarding the lack of post mortem on Afrasheem's body, Riyaz said post mortem was carried out to determine the cause of death and that all forensic investigations had been carried out by then.
Riyaz added that he was informed of the murder, by a duty officer. Previously, the rumor had been that former VP Ahmed Adeeb had informed Riyaz of the murder.
While Supreme Court had upheld the death penalty verdict, Afrasheem's next of kin had voiced against the decision stating that they wanted to find who had financed the murder and hold off the implementation until the entire investigation was fully concluded.
