UK confirms Nasheed amnesty status

The UK Government had formally notified that asylum has been granted to former President Mohamed Nasheed, who had been sentenced on terror charges.

Speaking to press, Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon said the Government of Maldives had sent a letter to the UK Government to clarify whether Nasheed had been granted asylum. The reply letter stated that Nasheed had been granted political asylum from the UK.

However, Minister Dunya said the letter had failed to mention when Nasheed was granted amnesty and had not specified additional details on the matter.

Dunya said Nasheed was granted medical leave to go the UK to complete his medical treatment and return back to the Maldives to serve the remainder of his sentence.
