MDP submits Humam verdict to Parliament Committee

MDP Parliamentary Group has submitted the death penalty verdict issued on Hussain Humam of H. Lobby, charged guilty on the first degree murder of late Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali, to the Government Oversight Committee of the Parliament.

The letter sent to the Committee by the PG said that most of the public and Police believed that there were more people who had orchestrated and financed the murder. However, the letter said neither the Government nor the investigative authorities had paid much attention to this fact and fast tracked the trial in Supreme Court.

MDP also noted that while the next of kin of Dr. Afrasheem had urged not to implement the verdict the Court had refused to accept the letter sent by the family, stating that letters should be sent on official hours. The letter said that the wishes of the family cannot be taken so lightly, when the Shariah grants the family certain rights over the matter.

The letter sent by the PG said that the Party had submitted the issue to the Parliamentary Committee due to these issues and as it was apparent that the verdict needed to be amended.

While MDP had submitted the motion, Maldives Correctional Services yesterday said the Service was preparing to implement the verdict.
