Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that it was time to introduce an interim Government in the Maldives.
He made the statement amid strong divisions between PPM, the Party leader former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom and President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom and their respective camps. The divisions were peaked when the Party Leader Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom introduced a reform agenda aimed at addressing the issues within PPM.
In his tweet Nasheed said that a multi-party interim Government should be installed in the country as the unstable political situation demanded such a move.
The splits within PPM solidified into factions over the question of the Party ticket for the 2018 Presidential elections, with some members pushing to grant the ticket to President Yameen without any contest. Maumoon had strongly contested against such a move.
The newly formed Opposition had argued from the very first day that an interim government should be instilled in the country.
