Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated that the planned rally to mark the 11th anniversary of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) cannot be held.
A statement released by MPS said the decision was informed to the Party in a meeting held in Iskandhar Koshi to discuss the rally.
MPS said that no political rallies can be held on the streets as any rally or gathering will hamper the flow of traffic on the road, effect the hundreds that use the roads and the potential loss of rights of the general public.
"Therefore, we cannot allow the planned rally by Maldivian Democratic Party to proceed as planned on July 11, 2016 from 2100 hrs to 0000 hrs. The Party was informed that Police will take necessary action to stop the rally, if the Party proceeds to hold the rally as planned," the statement read.
MDP had planned to start the rally from the Party haruge located in front of Artificial Beach on Bodu Thakurufaanu, stop at various points to express their sentiments and conclude the rally at the starting point. The rally, the Party said will conclude at midnight.
