Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) has called on Elections Commission (EC) to conduct their activities within their legal mandate and in a responsible manner.
A letter sent to EC by the Party stated that as per clause 21, subsection (f) of the Elections Commission Act, the mandate of the Commission was to “register political parties and carry out any and all related activities related to political parties as said in the law”.
The letter also stated that EC is not listed as the overseer of all political parties in any law.
“All Party members request Elections Commission to conduct their affairs within constitutional means,” the letter said.
The letter came after EC had ordered PPM President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom to toe the Party line, respect the Party laws and democratic values. EC made the statement in connection to a case filed by a PPM member.
