UK's new PM takes office

Theresa May took over as Britain's prime minister Wednesday, tasked with steering the country through the Brexit crisis. The 59-year-old replaced David Cameron, who was the first political casualty of last month's referendum when he announced his intention to quit hours after the result.

May will need to form a Cabinet -- speculated to include many female ministers and a designated Brexit minister. She is also expected to meet Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in the coming days, with Sturgeon telling a press conference Wednesday that Brexit "does not apply to Scotland, as Scotland voted differently in the referendum." Scotland bucked the national trend for the referendum, with 62% voting to remain.

Along with overseeing EU negotiations, May will need to unite a nation deeply divided over the referendum where 52% voted to leave and 48% to remain.

In a speech Monday, May said she would ignore calls for a re-run of the referendum. "Brexit means Brexit," she said. "And we're going to make a success of it."
