Commonwealth Special Envoy to arrive in Maldives next month

Newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim has revealed that the Special Envoy to the Maldives Dr. Willy Mutunga will arrive in the Maldives in early August 2016. He made the statement in a press conference held in Foreign Ministry yesterday.

Mutunga was appointed as Special Envoy by the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland - an appointment made at the request of the Maldivian government. He will assist the country in the process of constitutional and political transition in the country, and will begin his work when he arrives next month.

Dr Mutunga “will consult with all relevant stakeholders to encourage the strengthening of a pluralist, multi-party democracy, steps towards credible and inclusive presidential elections in 2018 and the advancement of reforms to give full effect to the separation of powers,” according to a statement by Commonwealth.

He comes with a wealth of judicial knowledge and the ability to listen to all sides and to mediate, due to the fact that he has had to deliberate on some of the most sensitive issues relating to past difficulties in Kenya, making him a sensible choice to be Special Envoy to the Maldives.
