Galolhu South MP Ahmed Mahloof's lawyer Ahmed Nazim has been suspended from the case. Criminal Court today stated that in the post-hearing press conference, Nazim made erroneous statements and baseless allegations regarding the case.
Speaking in the press conference, Nazim said the case was conducted unjustly and Mahloof's rights had been severely breached during the whole trial. He said the basic tenets of a fair trial had not been met and that due to the speed and hastiness of the trial, they had not been able to prepare an adequate defense.
The letter sent by Criminal Court today said that Nazim's statements had contributed to a negative perception of the Courts and the judicial system. It said Nazim had attempted to create a negative perception regarding the Courts and as a a result has been banned indefinitely from this case, effective from today.
Mahloof was sentenced to four months in jail over obstruction of duty charges last week Monday. As the sentence was less than one year, he does not risk losing his Parliament seat.
