Commonwealth envoy to meet opposition figures

Dr. Willy Mutunga is set to meet opposition figures today as part of his mandate to encourage the strengthening of a pluralist, multi-party democracy, steps towards credible and inclusive presidential elections in 2018 and the advancement of reforms to give full effect to the separation of powers.

Dr. Mutunga arrived in Maldives yesterday and met Foreign Minister as well.

The meeting with opposition figures will be held at 1600 hrs today. Male' City Mayor Mohamed Shihab, MDP Economic Committee Chair Ahmed Thasmeen, former Youth Minister Mohamed Maleeh, Adhaalath Party Chair on Foreign Relations Shidhaathaa Shareef, former STO Managing Director Adam Azim and lawyers for former President Mohamed Nasheed, Hisaan Hussain and Hassan Latheef will attend the meeting.

No details of Dr. Mutunga's trip had been made public. Up until his appointment as the special envoy, Dr. Mutunga was serving as Chief Justice in Kenya

Dr. Mutunga was appointed as Special Envoy by the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland - an appointment made at the request of the Maldivian government.
