Maldives and UK have agreed to "forget the past and look towards future" and furthering collaboration in the future.
This was agreed on in a meeting held between Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and High Commissioner to the UK from Maldives Ahmed Shian. The two had met on the sidelines of the Conservation Party's annual conference held from the 2nd to the 5th of this month.
A tweet posted by the High Commission's twitter account stated that both countries had discussed on bilateral relations and both had agreed "to forget the past and look towards future eco and trade collaborations".
Relations between Maldives and UK had deteriorated over the years, especially under the Government of former Prime Minister David Cameron. The relationship between the two nations had soured more over the UK government's decision to offer amnesty to former President Mohamed Nasheed and various statements released against internal policies of Maldives. However, this trend had changed following Cameron's resignation after the Brexit vote.
