PPM PG to meet Presidents Yameen, Maumoon

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Parliamentary Group has announced that they will be meeting Presidents Abdullah Yameen and Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in order to resolve the issues in PPM.

PPM PG Deputy Leader Riyaz Rasheed reported to Avas said that the PG collectively passed to engage in discussions with Presidents Yameen and Maumoon. He added they will be meeting the two Presidents at the same time.

He said the discussions will focus on resolving the internal issues of the Party and present a united front for the next Council elections in order to win the most number of seats. Riyaz said he hoped the discussions will arrive at detailed steps to resolve the issues.

"We hope that all issues will be aired out in this meeting to find a political solution. I hope that President Yameen and Maumoon will accept this invitation and find a solution for this," Riyaz said.

It has not been confirmed whether either of the Presidents had accepted the invitation.

The issues within PPM flared up when former President Maumoon's son and Dhiggaru Constituency MP Faris Maumoon voted against the whip line on the amendment to the Tourism Act, which called for the lease of islands without prior announcement. The Party had sought to boot out MP Faris, which prompted President Maumoon to release a statement heavily critical of the Government. He also announced a reform agenda of the Party.

A Council meeting was called to resolve the issue. However, many of the Council members had walked out of the meeting. The members claimed that President Maumoon had hijacked the Party and filed suit against him in Civil Court. Maumoon later on said the Council meeting can be held only when those members apologize over the matter.
