Will follow EC directive: Yameen faction

President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom's PPM faction says they will follow the Elections Commission (EC) directive on which faction really represented the Party.

Dr. Abdullah Khaleel, newly appointed Secretary General of the Party appointed by President Yameen, said in a press conference held today that both factions have shared the decisions of their respective factions with the EC. He said EC will determine which of the factions is legitimate.

"We've sent our decisions to the Elections Commission. Elections Commission will send in their response. When they issue their directives, we'll see what we have to do next," Dr. Khaleel said.

Dr. Khaleel stressed that there were no doubts about which Council was legitimate, adding the Council held by President Yameen was the legitimate one.

"The Court had issued a ruling regarding how the Party should be run. The Party Advisor is merely following that order. So there is no doubt whether the Council is legitimate or not. The Party was not functioning, the question arose, then it was handed over to the Advisor," Dr. Khaleel said.

"Elections Commission had not made a decision on the legitimacy issue, we will follow Elections Commission's ruling," he said.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's faction had sent a letter to the EC, claiming that the Council session chaired by President Yameen in his capacity as the Advisor was illegal.

EC is to meet to deliberate on the letters sent by both the factions.
