Maldives plans mega project to end sewage leaks in capital

The Male' Water and Sewerage Company is set to launch a mega initiative to put an end to sewage leaks in the capital Male.

The company's managing director Fazul Rasheed told reporters on Monday that the MVR75 million mega project would boost capacity for the next 50 years.

"The current system is equipped to handle a population of only 70,000 people. But the current population in Male is well over 170,000. That's why we've been having this problem [sewage leaks]" Fazul added.

The new project would see the installation of an additional 'shallow line' and boost pump capacity. MWSC also plans to re-lay the main sewage pipes and add emergency systems in pump stations.

The company expects to kick-start the project early next year and end it by 2018.
