A three year old is in critical condition after getting crushed under a trike in Kaaf Atoll Huraa island on Friday.
The boy suffered a ruptured liver and still has internal bleeding despite undergoing emergency surgery in state run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Authorities are now trying to send the body abroad for further treatment.
IGMH spokesperson Mohamed Mausoom told Avas said three year old Mohamed Naal Niyaz remains in critical condition despite the surgery and is expected to be airlifted abroad later Saturday.
"He suffered major internal injuries. We are now trying to send him abroad. But its difficult to say an exact time when we will be able to do so. But we are trying to send him sometime today [Saturday]" Mausoom said.
Huraa council president Easa Ahmed told Avas that the trike had dropped off some kids and Naal had reportedly suddenly grabbed the vehicle.
Naal had been crushed under the front wheel as the driver failed to see the boy, Easa explained.
A police team has also been deployed to the island to investigate the accident.
