Maldives denies SriLankan airlines operations to south

Maldives Immigration Wednesday denied reports that Sri Lankan Airlines flights have been scheduled for Gan International Airport from December 1.

In a statement immigration revealed that the media reports of scheduled SriLankan Airlines flight to Gan were completely false which have been backed by civil aviation authorities and the airport operator. The statement also insisted that immigration had not issued the necessary permit for the airline to commence operations to Gan.

Immigration also said that the reported sales of tickets were a completely unfounded marketing campaign adding that it was unaware of when the airport would be open for operations after its major revamp.

The statement also urged airlines to communicate with the department -- reminding that it was the foremost authority to monitor entry and exit into the archipelago.

Immigration had reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the country and its people.

The statement also insisted that immigration would not take responsibility for any inconvenience caused by such fault reports before warning strict legal action against anyone spreading false reports which could harm the reputation of the department.

Immigration department's comes after SriLankan airlines had unveiled an office in Maldives' southern most Atoll Addu as the airline prepared to operate flights between Gan island and Colombo from next month.

Government Tuesday announced the date to open Gan-Addu International Airport after completing a major project to expand the runway of the airport in the southern most Atoll of the archipelago.

Addu International Airport Company's general manager Ibthishama Ahmed Saeed had said the airport would be open for operations on November 15, which has seen 960 meters of land reclaimed to accommodate the expanded runway.
