China offers to aid Maldives in legislation, governance

China on Wednesday has offered enhanced cooperation in legislation and increase the sharing of experience on state governance with the Maldives.

China's top legislator Zhang Dejiang during a meeting with the visiting Maldives speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed assured that China will continue to work with the Maldives to expand mutually beneficial cooperation and push for greater development of bilateral relations.

Maseeh said Maldives-China relations can serve as a model of relations between small and big countries.

Developing mutually beneficial cooperation with China meets the desires of the government, parliament and people of the Maldives, he said.

He said the Maldives parliament was willing to work with the National People's Congress (NPC) to enhance friendly exchanges and support bilateral pragmatic cooperation, so as to better serve the two countries and their people.

China has funded major infrastructure development in the Maldives, including the nation’s main airport and the ongoing landmark bridge project connecting capital Male with airport island Hulhule.

The Link Road connecting the island wards of southernmost Addu atoll had also been developed with China’s free aid.

Moreover, several Chinese private firms continue to invest in the tourism and construction sectors of the archipelago, especially in the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale.
