Three sentenced to life over elderly man's murder

Criminal Court Monday handed life sentences to three men charged over the brutal murder of Hussain Mohamed Manik (Huseynubey) in Haa Alif Hoarafushi island six years ago.

The trio, Ahmed Ibrahim, Nuuman Abdulland a nephew of the victim, Mohamed Latheef, from Hoarafushi island were sentenced months after the court had originally scheduled a sentencing hearing.

The state had charged all three suspects with terrorism accusing them of kidnapping the victim, binding him at an abandoned house and suffocating the victim by stuffing sand in his mouth. The state had argued that the victim had died of suffocation from the sand.

The three suspects were also charged with theft for stealing over MVR100,000 and over USD1,000 from the residence of the victim in September 2010.
