Google has revealed that Maldives was the number one holiday spot searched by Brits in 2016.

According to results published Thursday, The Maldives were the most searched for destination in the UK over the last 12 months.

Celebrities including Katie Price, Dita Von Teese and and Fernando Torres have all been spotted in the tropical islands in recent years and the allure of the white sands and crystal clear waters is equally irresistible to the general public.

The Maldives welcomed an increase in visitor arrivals from the UK, with 2016 figures revealing an 11 per cent increase in UK tourists during the first eight months of 2016, equating to 76,083 UK tourists visiting the Maldives compared to 68,519 in 2015.

The second most popular destination on Google was Malaga, which has long been a favourite holiday destination for Brits thanks to its prime location on Spain’s Costa Del Sol.

In third place was another old Spanish favourite – the island of Tenerife, with its volcanic sand, colourful carnival and popular family resorts.
