Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has decided to switch customs clearance of the majority of the imports coming into the main port in the capital Male to the port in the nearby reclaimed suburb Hulhumale.
MPL general manager Ibrahim Rasheed revealed plans to commence cargo clearance in the Hulhumale port in the next two months.
The majority of the cargo would include goods brought in for the islets and resort construction, Rasheed said.
Rasheed said the second cargo clearance port would ease the present delay in clearing goods from the port in the capital Male.
According to recent statistics, over 40 percent of imports are headed to the Atolls and resorts. Despite the uptick in imports, the limited facilities in the Male port has caused major headaches for importers.
MPL has decided to offer 24 hour service from the Hulhumale port.
